AI Bookkeeping at $549 a Month vs. Human Bookkeeping at $75

Zeni Review (2026): Pricing, the QuickBooks Requirement & Better Alternatives

Last Updated: October 3, 2026

Zeni pairs AI bookkeeping with a human finance pod — a controller, a bookkeeping manager and a bookkeeping analyst — and prices it from $549 a month for pre-revenue companies and $799 once you have revenue. Both figures are floors: Zeni’s own footnote says pricing depends on bookkeeping complexity, monthly expenses and annual revenue. The detail most comparisons miss is in Zeni’s FAQ: a QuickBooks Online Plus subscription is required, billed separately by Intuit, so the headline is never the all-in number. This review uses only figures published on zeni.ai (checked 3 October 2026).

Transparency Note: This review is researched and published by Maxim Liberty. While we are a direct competitor, we have utilized objective pricing data, BBB ratings, and verified customer reviews to provide a fair market analysis of the best bookkeeping services available. Every third-party fact on this page is sourced and dated, and quotes are verbatim and linked. Ratings, pricing and company details change over time, so please check the linked source before relying on any figure. If you find an inaccuracy, tell us and we will correct it.

What Is Zeni?

Zeni is an AI bookkeeping platform for US startups, backed by a human finance pod. Every plan includes a controller, a bookkeeping manager and a bookkeeping analyst, and bundles AI bill payments, AI reimbursements and an AI business checking account at no extra charge. The pitch is a daily-updated set of books rather than a month-end scramble, and on its own G2 profile Zeni claims customers save around 70 hours a month.

It is built for a specific buyer: venture-backed, US-incorporated, pre-revenue to early-revenue companies that want a finance function rather than a bookkeeper. If that is you, the bundled controller is genuinely good value at $549. If you are an established small business with 300 transactions a month and a CPA who already files your return, you are paying for a finance pod you will not use.

Zeni Pricing: Every Published Plan and Add-On

All figures below are from zeni.ai/pricing, checked 3 October 2026, including the content inside its collapsed tabs. Zeni’s footnote applies throughout: “Pricing based on bookkeeping complexity, monthly expenses, and annual revenue.” Every number is a floor.

AI Bookkeeping

Plan Month to month Billed annually For
Starter From $549/mo $494/mo Pre-revenue companies
Growth From $799/mo $719/mo Revenue-generating companies
Enterprise Custom Custom Complex companies

Annual billing is advertised as a 10% saving. A QuickBooks Online Plus subscription is required on top of all three, billed separately by Intuit.

Fractional CFO — note the setup fees

Plan Monthly One-time setup fee
CFO Lite From $1,599 +$2,000
CFO Premium From $2,990 +$6,000
Enterprise From $4,990 +$6,000

The setup fees are easy to miss and they are substantial: CFO Premium costs $6,000 before the first monthly invoice. Maxim Liberty’s fractional CFO service is $1,000/mo for up to 20 hours with no setup fee.

Taxes

Plan Price For
Tax Starter $2,499/yr Pre-revenue
Tax Growth $3,899/yr Revenue up to $500K
Tax Enterprise Custom Revenue over $500K

Published tax add-ons: R&D tax credit at 20% of the credit received, Delaware franchise tax +$300, Form 5471 +$1,500 per form, Form 5472 +$1,000 per form, FBAR +$450, ISO exercise reporting +$500 per block, Form 8858 +$1,000 per form, Form 3115 +$750 per form.

A note on scope. Maxim Liberty is not a CPA firm and does not provide tax advice. Our tax filing starts at $750/yr for return preparation and we work alongside your CPA. If you need R&D credit studies or foreign-subsidiary reporting, Zeni or a CPA firm is the right call — we will tell you that rather than sell you something we should not.

Payroll

Payroll Manager Service from $199/mo, on an annual contract. Published add-ons: state registration $300 per state; W-2 and W-2c $199 per block of 5; implementation $550 for up to 3 hours; account closure $250 per state; benefits reconciliation and administration $250/hour; additional calls with your payroll manager $150/hour; payroll consultation $250/hour; IRS Forms 940 and 941 plus state filings $149 per jurisdiction per quarter; address changes $149 per state.

Maxim Liberty’s payroll processing is $50 per run plus $10 per employee, with no annual contract.

What a fully loaded year actually costs

A pre-revenue startup taking bookkeeping, tax and payroll pays $549 + about $208 + $199 = roughly $956 a month, plus a QuickBooks Online Plus subscription, on an annual payroll commitment. The same scope at Maxim Liberty is $75 for bookkeeping, about $63/mo for tax filing and $50 per payroll run plus $10 per employee — and you keep your own QuickBooks file.

The QuickBooks Online Plus Requirement

This is the single most important thing to understand before signing with Zeni, and it is stated plainly in their own FAQ rather than hidden:

“You must use Quickbooks Online (QBO) Plus. If you do not currently utilize this software, we will work with you to migrate your data from your current accounting software over to QBO Plus.”

Three consequences worth thinking through. First, the advertised price is not the all-in price — QBO Plus is one of Intuit’s more expensive tiers and you pay Intuit directly. Second, if you are on Xero, Zoho, Wave, FreshBooks, Sage or QuickBooks Desktop, moving to Zeni means migrating your accounting system, not just changing bookkeepers. Third, Zeni syncs to QBO, which is good news on exit: the ledger is yours.

To be fair to Zeni, requiring a mainstream ledger you own is considerably better than a proprietary platform you cannot take with you. Compare Bench, where the books live on Bench’s own system unless you pay $1,200 in setup plus $55/hr to work in QuickBooks instead.

The Public Review Evidence

Zeni’s record splits sharply depending on where you look. On G2 it is the strongest in this comparison set and we are not going to pretend otherwise. On Google and at the BBB it is not. Every figure below was read from the source itself on 3 October 2026.

  • G2: 4.5/5 across 83 reviews — a genuinely large sample for a company this size. Reviewers consistently praise the dashboard, the reporting depth and the speed of the close.
  • Google: 3.0/5 from 2 reviews for Zeni, Inc of Palo Alto — one 5-star and one 1-star. The 1-star describes a twelve-month contract and a referral to collections.
  • Better Business Bureau: D+ rating, not accredited. BBB gives two reasons: failure to respond to one complaint filed against the business, and length of time operating. The complaint is published and still unanswered.
  • Trustpilot: no reviews; the profile is unclaimed.

By contrast, Maxim Liberty maintains a 5.0 rating from 14 verified Clutch reviews plus 4.9 out of 5 across 92 reviews on Trustindex, BBB A+ Accreditation, and named CPA testimonials. Zeni wins on review volume; we have the BBB accreditation it lacks.

The Verdict: Real Customer Experiences

How these quotes were selected. We show the 5 most recent worst reviews over the past 3 years for each provider — or all of them where fewer exist. The same rule is applied to both companies, and quotes are reproduced verbatim (and, where long, truncated) from the linked public sources.

In fairness to Zeni: on G2, sorting by lowest rating returns exactly one negative review out of 83, and the next entry down is already a 4 out of 5. The bookkeeping itself is not what people complain about — reviewers praise the dashboard and the reporting. All three complaints below are about the same thing: the twelve-month contract and how cancellation is handled.

“Disappointing Service Overshadowed a Great Product. I’m extremely disappointed with Zeni. Their customer service is the worst I’ve ever had. I’d used Zeni at a previous company. We cancelled our contract with them there because we ended up getting nickeled and dimed for everything we asked for help with…” [truncated]

“I prefer companies that collect for services actually rendered. Zeni trapped Sync Brands in a twelve month contract. Their billing dept worked hard. When I stopped them from drafting my account, they sent me to collections.”

⚠ BBB complaint — unanswered

“On March 6, 2026, I signed an online subscription agreement with Zeni, Inc. for bookkeeping services (Growth Plan, $574/month, 1-year term)… Within one business day of signing, I requested cancellation in writing before any services were rendered. Zeni refused to honor my cancellation, citing the one-year contract term.” [truncated]

★★★★★

“Professional, detailed, and highly organized. They worked closely with me to build a system that fits how my business actually runs.”

— Ryan Cherlin, June 13, 2025

Zeni reviews quoted from its G2 profile, checked 3 October 2026. Maxim Liberty reviews quoted from Trustindex.

Three sources, one pattern. A G2 reviewer who was told month-to-month would cost more. A Google reviewer sent to collections after stopping payment on a twelve-month contract. And a BBB complaint from someone who asked to cancel within one business day of signing, before any services were rendered, and was refused on the strength of the annual term. Zeni has not answered that complaint, which is why its BBB rating is D+. We are reporting what three independent public records say, not characterising Zeni’s intent — but if you are evaluating Zeni, read the contract term before you sign, and ask in writing what cancellation costs.

The substance of the G2 complaint is worth separating from the rating. The reviewer liked the product — “the dashboard and the reporting in Zeni” — and objected to being charged for help and to being told a month-to-month arrangement would cost more. That matches what the pricing page shows: annual billing is cheaper, payroll requires an annual contract, and a long list of support activities carries an hourly rate. None of that is hidden. It is simply a different commercial model from ours, where $75 a month includes five hours and a scheduled call.

Who Zeni Is Best For

If you are… Better choice Why
A VC-backed startup wanting a finance function, not a bookkeeper Zeni A controller, bookkeeping manager and analyst are bundled at $549. Buying that separately costs more.
Already running QuickBooks Online Plus and happy to stay Zeni is a fair fit No migration, and the required subscription is one you already pay for.
An established small business under 500 transactions a month Maxim Liberty $75/mo against $549. 94% of our Standard clients bill the plan minimum.
On Xero, Zoho, Wave, FreshBooks, Sage or QuickBooks Desktop Maxim Liberty Zeni requires migrating to QBO Plus. We work in the file you already own.
Behind on your books Maxim Liberty Zeni publishes no catch-up price. Ours is $75 per month behind with no limit on how far back.
Outside the United States Maxim Liberty Zeni serves US-based entities only.
A CPA or bookkeeping firm wanting white-label work Maxim Liberty Zeni publishes no partner or white-label pricing. Our CPA plan is $300/mo for 30 hours, then $10/hr.
Needing R&D credit studies or foreign-subsidiary reporting Zeni or a CPA firm We are not a CPA firm and do not do this work. Zeni prices it; so does Kruze.

Pros and Cons

✓ Pros

  • Strongest review record in this set — 4.5/5 across 83 G2 reviews
  • A controller, bookkeeping manager and analyst bundled into every plan
  • Books updated daily rather than at month end
  • Bill payments, reimbursements and business checking included at no charge
  • Syncs to QuickBooks Online, so the ledger stays yours on exit
  • Publishes a full, itemised add-on rate card — unusually transparent for this market
  • Bookkeeping quality is not what customers complain about; the dashboard and reporting are praised even in the negative reviews

✗ Cons

  • A QuickBooks Online Plus subscription is required, billed separately, so the advertised price is never the all-in cost
  • Entry price is $549/mo — roughly seven times our Standard plan
  • Every published figure is a floor, priced on complexity, expenses and revenue
  • CFO plans carry $2,000 to $6,000 one-time setup fees
  • Payroll requires an annual contract
  • No catch-up or cleanup pricing published at any volume
  • Accounting basis, cancellation terms, money-back guarantee and staff location are all unpublished
  • BBB rating of D+, not accredited, for failure to respond to a complaint — the complaint is published and still unanswered
  • Annual contract lock-in is the recurring theme across its G2, Google and BBB records
  • US-based entities only
  • Staff location is not disclosed on zeni.ai, while its own careers portal advertises Finance Operations roles in Pune, India
  • Support activities carry hourly rates — the one negative G2 review is about exactly this

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Zeni require QuickBooks?

Yes. Zeni’s own FAQ states that you must use QuickBooks Online Plus, and that it will migrate your data to QBO Plus if you are not already on it. The subscription is billed separately by Intuit, so it is an additional cost on top of Zeni’s monthly fee. Maxim Liberty works inside whichever accounting file you already own and requires no particular subscription.

How much does Zeni cost?

Zeni publishes AI bookkeeping from $549 a month for pre-revenue companies and from $799 for revenue-generating companies, with annual billing at $494 and $719. Enterprise pricing is on request. Its own footnote says pricing depends on bookkeeping complexity, monthly expenses and annual revenue, so those are starting points rather than quotes. Fractional CFO starts at $1,599 a month plus a $2,000 setup fee, taxes at $2,499 a year, and payroll at $199 a month on an annual contract (zeni.ai/pricing, checked 3 October 2026).

Does Zeni charge a setup fee?

Not for bookkeeping. Its fractional CFO plans do: $2,000 on CFO Lite and $6,000 on CFO Premium and Enterprise. Payroll implementation is $550 for up to three hours.

Where is Zeni’s team based?

Zeni does not say on zeni.ai. Its own public careers portal at zeni.bamboohr.com/careers lists a “Sr / Finance Associate (Pune/Mohali) RTR” role under Finance Operations, located in Pune, Maharashtra, India, alongside US roles in Lehi, Utah and a remote US fractional CFO position (checked 3 October 2026). We are reporting what the job listings show, not what Zeni says, because Zeni does not address it. Maxim Liberty is US-registered with delivery centers in India and states so on its About page — offshore delivery is not the issue, disclosing it is.

Is Zeni available outside the United States?

No. Zeni states that its services are currently available only to US-based entities.

Does Zeni publish catch-up bookkeeping prices?

No. There is no catch-up or cleanup pricing anywhere on zeni.ai/pricing. Maxim Liberty charges $75 per month behind, covering up to five hours a month, then $15 an hour, with no limit on how far back we go.

Does Zeni offer a money-back guarantee?

None is published on its pricing page, and no cancellation terms are stated either. Maxim Liberty offers a 100% money-back guarantee on your first retainer, refundable on the unused balance.

What is Zeni’s BBB rating?

BBB lists Zeni, Inc of Palo Alto, California at a D+ rating and not accredited. BBB gives two reasons: failure to respond to one complaint filed against the business, and length of time the business has been operating. The complaint, dated 10 April 2026 and categorised “Order Issues”, is published on the profile and remains unanswered; it describes a customer who signed a one-year Growth Plan agreement and requested cancellation in writing within one business day, before any services were rendered, and was refused.

Can you cancel Zeni?

Zeni does not publish cancellation terms on its pricing page. Annual billing is advertised as saving 10%, and payroll explicitly requires an annual contract. Its G2, Google and BBB records all contain complaints about the twelve-month term and how cancellation was handled, so get the contract term and the cancellation cost in writing before signing. Maxim Liberty is cancel-anytime, with a 100% money-back guarantee on your first retainer, refundable on the unused balance.

Is Zeni good?

On the evidence, yes, for the buyer it is built for. It holds 4.5 out of 5 across 83 G2 reviews, bundles a controller into every plan, and updates books daily. The questions to ask are whether you need a finance pod rather than a bookkeeper, whether you are willing to run QuickBooks Online Plus, and whether $549 a month is proportionate to your transaction volume.

The Bottom Line

Zeni is a good product with a real review record, aimed squarely at venture-backed US startups that want a finance function. At $549 a month it bundles a controller, a bookkeeping manager and an analyst, and it keeps your books in a QuickBooks file you own. If that is your situation, it is a defensible choice and we would not argue otherwise.

The reasons to look elsewhere are specific rather than general. The required QuickBooks Online Plus subscription means the advertised price is never the whole price. Every figure is a floor set by complexity, expenses and revenue. Catch-up pricing, accounting basis, cancellation terms and staff location are not published, and there is no money-back guarantee. And the contract matters: Zeni holds a D+ BBB rating for not answering a complaint from a customer who tried to cancel within a day of signing, before any work was done. And at seven times our entry price, a business doing 300 transactions a month is paying for a finance pod rather than for bookkeeping.

If you want books kept accurately, in whatever software you already use, for a price published in full before you commit, that is what we do.

Looking for transparent, month-to-month bookkeeping with no required subscription?

Maxim Liberty keeps books from $75 a month — 5 hours included, additional hours at $15/hr, in whatever accounting software you already own. Catch-up is $75 per month behind. Every rate is on our pricing page, and your first retainer carries a 100% money-back guarantee, refundable on the unused balance.
